Union Station DC, opened in 1907, is considered to be one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts style of architecture and was designed to serve as a gateway for the capital city. At the time it was built, it was the largest train station in the world. However, the advent of air travel led to a decline in railroad passengers, and the building was sealed in 1981. After three years of renovation at a cost of $160 million, Union Station reopened in 1988 - restored to its former glory. This living museum was redeveloped as a bustling retail center and intermodal transportation facility. In addition to 130 unique shops and restaurants, Union Station is the hub for Amtrak's headquarters and executive offices. You will not want to miss the most visited destination in the nation's capital!
